Xenogears is the debut entry in what would later become the broader Xeno franchise. Directed by Tetsuya Takahashi and produced by Hiromichi Tanaka, with character designs by Kunihiko Tanaka, mechanical designs by Junya Ishigaki, and music by Yasunori Mitsuda, it was released in Japan on February 11, 1998, and in North America on October 20, 1998.
The game blends traditional JRPG exploration and storytelling with two distinct battle systems. On-foot combat uses a variation of Squareโs Active Time Battle system combined with a unique Attack Point (AP) system that allows players to input combinations of light, medium, and heavy attacks to unlock powerful Deathblows. Gear battles involve piloting giant mechs that consume fuel with every action and feature their own set of abilities and customizations. Exploration takes place in fully 3D polygonal environments that can be rotated, with 2D character sprites overlaid on the 3D world.
The narrative is notably dense and mature, exploring themes of identity, memory, free will, religion, and the relationship between humans and technology. Disc 1 focuses more on traditional gameplay and world-building, while Disc 2 shifts toward a more cinematic, story-driven presentation due to development constraints. Despite (or because of) its ambitious scope, Xenogears remains a cult classic celebrated for its storytelling, music, and unique combat systems.
The original PlayStation release of Xenogears comes on two CD-ROMs. The story continues across both discs, with Disc 2 shifting toward a more narrative-focused structure.
Gears are giant humanoid mechs that characters can pilot in battle. Gear combat uses a separate system from on-foot fights, with actions consuming Fuel. Gears can be customized with different equipment and abilities.
In on-foot combat, players spend Attack Points (AP) by inputting combinations of light (Square), medium (Triangle), and heavy (Circle) attacks. Successful combinations unlock powerful Deathblow techniques that characters can learn and reuse.
Due to development time and resource constraints, much of Disc 2 relies more heavily on text narration, still images, and cinematic sequences rather than fully interactive exploration and combat segments. This has become one of the most discussed aspects of the game.
A typical playthrough lasts approximately 50โ70 hours. The dense story, side content, and character development contribute to a lengthy experience.
Xenogears is the spiritual predecessor to the Xenosaga series and later Xenoblade games, all directed or influenced by Tetsuya Takahashi. While they share thematic DNA and some conceptual ideas, they are not direct sequels and take place in separate continuities.
