Chrono Cross is the second main entry in the Chrono series, directed and written by Masato Kato with production by Hiromichi Tanaka, character designs by Nobuteru Yūki, and music by Yasunori Mitsuda. It was released in Japan on November 18, 1999, and in North America on August 15, 2000.
The game is set primarily in the tropical archipelago of El Nido and centers on the concept of parallel worlds (Home World and Another World). Players control Serge as he travels between these dimensions, recruiting a massive roster of more than 40 unique characters, each with distinct personalities, speech patterns, and abilities. Combat is turn-based with no random encounters—enemies are visible on the field. Instead of traditional experience points and levels, characters grow stronger through battle and the equipping of Elements (the game’s magic and skill system). Elements are arranged on a grid and color-coded by affinity (White, Black, Red, Blue, Green, Yellow), allowing strategic customization.
The story expands on themes of fate, free will, and the consequences of time manipulation from Chrono Trigger while telling a largely self-contained narrative. Multiple endings, New Game+, and extensive character recruitment contribute to high replay value. The original PlayStation version is a single-player experience across two CD-ROMs and is widely praised for its visuals, music, and ambitious storytelling.
The original PlayStation release of Chrono Cross comes on two CD-ROMs. Disc changes occur at specific points in the story.
There are no traditional character levels or experience points. Characters grow stronger by participating in battles (which improve their base stats) and by equipping more powerful Elements on their Element grids.
Elements are the game’s equivalent of magic spells, techniques, and consumable items. They are color-coded by elemental affinity and equipped on each character’s personal Element grid. Higher-level Elements are more powerful but cost more stamina to use.
There are more than 40 unique playable characters that can be recruited throughout the game. Only three can be in the active party at once (with Serge often required in the early-to-mid game).
A typical main-story playthrough lasts approximately 30–40 hours. Recruiting most characters, exploring both worlds thoroughly, and pursuing multiple endings or New Game+ can extend total playtime well beyond 50–60 hours.
Yes. Chrono Cross features multiple endings depending on player choices, the completion of certain side content, and New Game+ progress. The game is known for offering several distinct conclusions.
